This workshop includes personal accounts of abuse, practical communication techniques, and effective responses to disclosures.

directly with children, including but not limited to:

Education: teachers, school counsellors, teaching assistants, parent-teacher associations, daycare staff
Healthcare: paediatricians, school nurses, occupational therapists
Local authorities: social workers, child protection investigators, home visitors
Youth development: community youth workers, sports coaches
Faith-based: clergy, youth ministers, missionaries.

What topics does it cover?

Our experiences:

‘Nothing about us, without us!’ Survivor engagement is a top priority. Our training is designed and delivered exclusively by people who have lived experience. Siobhan and Tim have direct experience of abuse within the family, whereas David’s personal experience is of abuse within an institutional (school) setting. We will work to include more survivors over time, thus broadening the depth of experience we can draw from in our work.

Why don’t children tell us?

We explore the challenges children encounter when they are being abused, such as the psychological and emotional barriers that can hinder their willingness to speak. Understanding these obstacles is essential for creating an environment in which children feel able to tell.

How can we help children to disclose?

Participants engage in practical exercises and group discussions designed to improve their skills in facilitating disclosures from the children in their care. We provide specific examples of supportive phrases to use, emphasising the importance of avoiding leading questions. These insights are rooted in our personal experiences, where we often wished someone had approached us with such understanding.

How can we respond to disclosures of child sexual abuse?

We offer guidance on how to respond appropriately when a child entrusts you with a disclosure, maximising the chances that they feel safe to continue the conversation. We demonstrate the various reactions children get to disclosures, ranging from seriously unhelpful to excellent. Be prepared to put your new skills to use during this live training!

If relevant to your role, we can include our accounts of the court process in child sexual abuse cases, and how to prepare children for this challenging experience.

After the workshop, we begin our follow-up process. This includes a 30min check-in with Siobhan, a few months post-training, to understand how your organisation has integrated the learning into its practices, and whether any disclosures have been made since.

Our fees

The standard fee for our full-day workshop is £3,800. We are currently offering a discounted pilot rate of £3,200 until the end of 2025. This includes all trainer expenses, facilitation by three trainers, and a follow-up process to assess the integration of learning within your organisation.
